Sleeve boxes, also called sleeve and tray packaging, use a two-piece sliding mechanism: an inner tray holds the product, an outer sleeve wraps around it. The sliding reveal adds a tactile experience that single-piece boxes cannot match. Custom sleeve boxes from Teal Packaging start at $1.75/unit at 100+ pieces.

The Sliding Experience

There is a reason Apple used sleeve-style packaging for the original iPhone. The slow reveal, the controlled friction as the tray slides out, the moment when the product appears. It transforms a simple unboxing into an event. Every premium electronics, cosmetics, and chocolate brand knows this.

The friction between sleeve and tray is engineered. Too loose and the tray falls out in shipping. Too tight and customers struggle to open it. Our standard tolerance is 1-1.5mm clearance per side, calibrated during prototyping.

Sleeve Box Configurations

  • Full sleeve: The outer sleeve covers the entire tray. Most protective, most premium feel. Used for electronics, luxury cosmetics, premium chocolates.
  • Partial sleeve (belly band): The sleeve covers only the middle portion of the tray, leaving both ends exposed. Shows the product at both edges. Popular for soap bars and artisan food items.
  • Matchbox style: Small-format sleeve and tray. Used for business cards, jewelry, USB drives, and small sample sets. Sizes from 2x3x0.5" to 4x6x1".
  • Multi-compartment tray: The inner tray has die-cut dividers creating separate cells for multiple items (chocolate assortments, cosmetic sets, tea samplers).

Materials

  • Rigid board (50-70pt): The premium standard. Both sleeve and tray are chipboard wrapped in printed art paper (128-157gsm). Most luxury sleeve boxes use this construction.
  • SBS folding carton (18-24pt): Lighter weight, lower cost. Good for mid-range products where the sliding mechanism adds perceived value without the full cost of rigid construction.
  • Corrugated: Rare for sleeve boxes, but E-flute works for larger items where structural strength matters more than smoothness.

Pricing

  • SBS sleeve+tray (4x3x1.5"): $1.75 to $3.00/unit at 200-500 qty; $1.15 to $2.10/unit at 1,000+
  • Rigid sleeve+tray (6x4x2"): $4.50 to $7.50/unit at 200-500 qty; $3.20 to $5.50/unit at 1,000+
  • Matchbox style (3x2x0.75"): $1.20 to $2.20/unit at 200-500 qty; $0.80 to $1.50/unit at 1,000+

Design Considerations

Print the inside of the sleeve if budget allows. When the tray slides out, the customer sees the inner sleeve surface. A printed interior (even a simple pattern or brand color) doubles the visual impact.

For the tray, consider a contrasting color to the sleeve. Black tray inside a white sleeve. Gold tray inside a matte black sleeve. The contrast amplifies the reveal moment.

Add a thumb notch (small die-cut semicircle on the sleeve edge) so customers can grip the tray to pull it out. Without it, they end up shaking the box or prying with fingernails. Small detail, big UX improvement.

Sleeve Box Design Tips

The sleeve sliding over the tray is the defining interaction. Getting it right is everything:

Clearance is critical: The sleeve needs 1-1.5mm clearance on each side to slide smoothly. Too tight and it binds. Too loose and it feels cheap. Our standard tolerance hits this sweet spot.

Thumb notch: Add a small semicircular notch at the top of the sleeve where the tray edge sits. Makes it easy to grip the tray and pull it out.

Interior printing: The inside of the sleeve is visible when the tray slides out. Printed interiors create a complete brand experience. Even a simple pattern or brand color makes a difference.

Sleeve Box Production Process

  • Step 1: Cutting - both sleeve and tray are die-cut from sheet stock
  • Step 2: Folding - score lines are folded to create the 3D shape
  • Step 3: Gluing - adhesive bonds the sleeve and tray panels
  • Step 4: Wrapping - printed paper is wrapped around the rigid core (if applicable)
