Standard folding cartons are made from 300 to 600gsm paperboard. They fold flat. They are lightweight. They work fine for most products. Rigid boxes are a different category entirely: 1.6mm to 2.5mm thick chipboard wrapped in printed paper, fabric, or specialty material. They do not fold. They do not flex. They hold their shape permanently.

Materials and Finishing
Base board: 1.6mm chipboard (standard), 2.0mm (premium), 2.5mm (heavy luxury). Wrapped in your choice of coated paper (gloss or matte), uncoated textured paper, linen fabric, leatherette, suede, or velvet. Interior lining options include flocked velvet (black, navy, burgundy, ivory), satin, printed paper, or EVA foam inserts.
Exterior finishing: soft-touch matte lamination, foil stamping (gold, silver, rose gold, custom colors), embossing, debossing, spot UV, and Pantone color matching. Most luxury brands combine soft-touch matte with foil-stamped logos.

Rigid boxes cost more than folding cartons because they require more material and hand assembly. Typical ranges at 300 qty: small boxes (3"x3"x2") from $3.00/unit, medium boxes (6"x6"x3") from $4.50/unit, large boxes (10"x8"x4") from $7.00/unit. Foil stamping adds $0.30 to $0.80. Custom inserts add $0.50 to $3.00. Collapsible construction adds 10% to 15%.

Rigid Box Design: What Makes It Premium
The premium feel of rigid boxes comes from specific construction details:
Weight: Thicker board feels more substantial. 60pt feels noticeably better than 50pt. The difference is felt before the box is even opened.
Wrapping quality: Wrinkle-free wrapping, precise corner alignment, and consistent tension all signal quality. Cheap rigid boxes show wrinkles, gaps, or bubbling.
