What Is Sustainable Packaging?
Sustainable packaging minimizes environmental impact across its entire lifecycle: from raw material sourcing through manufacturing, shipping, use, and end-of-life disposal or recycling. At Teal Packaging, sustainability is not a marketing add-on. It is built into every product we make, from the FSC-certified paper we source to the soy-based inks we print with.
The packaging industry accounts for roughly 30% of municipal solid waste in the US. Brands that switch to sustainable packaging directly reduce this number while building consumer trust. A 2024 McKinsey study found that 78% of US consumers consider sustainability when making purchase decisions, and 55% are willing to pay more for eco-friendly packaging.
Our Sustainable Packaging Materials
FSC-Certified Paperboard
Every paperboard product we offer is available in FSC-certified stock. The Forest Stewardship Council certification guarantees that the paper comes from responsibly managed forests where harvested trees are replanted and biodiversity is protected. FSC Chain of Custody tracking ensures the certified material is tracked from forest to finished product.
Recycled Content Board
Our recycled paperboard contains 50% to 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) fiber. Recycled corrugated board uses 70% to 95% recycled content as standard. Using recycled fiber reduces energy consumption by 70% and water use by 60% compared to virgin fiber production.
Soy-Based and Water-Based Inks
Traditional printing inks are petroleum-based and release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during production. Our soy-based inks are derived from renewable soybeans, produce brighter colors with less ink required, and are easier to de-ink during the recycling process. Water-based coatings replace plastic lamination where possible.
Biodegradable and Compostable Options
All our kraft and cardboard products are naturally biodegradable in industrial and home compost conditions. For brands needing certified compostability, we offer BPI-certified packaging that meets ASTM D6400 standards for commercial composting.
Sustainable Packaging by Product Type

How to Make Your Packaging More Sustainable
Step 1: Reduce Material
Use the smallest box that safely fits your product. Eliminate unnecessary inner packaging. Right-sizing reduces material use by 15% to 30% for most brands.
Step 2: Choose Recycled or FSC Materials
Switch from virgin paperboard to recycled content or FSC-certified stock. Performance is identical. Cost is comparable or lower.
Step 3: Eliminate Plastic
Replace plastic lamination with aqueous coating. Use paper tape instead of plastic tape. Choose paper-based inserts over foam. Use compostable PLA windows instead of PET.
Step 4: Print Sustainably
Soy-based inks and water-based coatings. Avoid metallic foils where possible (or use recyclable foils). Keep printing to necessary surfaces only.
Step 5: Communicate It
Add recycling instructions, FSC logos, and How2Recycle labels to your packaging. Consumers want to recycle but often do not know how. Clear instructions increase recycling rates by 30%.
