Formats That Fit Electronics

Rigid Boxes

For a device that carries a price worth presenting, rigid construction over chipboard gives a lid that lifts with resistance and a wrap that holds foil stamping, embossing, and soft-touch cleanly. Rigid is also the format that keeps a device seated in a fixed position under the lid rather than resting loose. Specialty rigid starts at 100 units.

Folding Cartons

Materials Worth Specifying

Rigid boxes are built over chipboard at 1.5 to 2.5mm, and the thicker end is where a lid feels most substantial on a heavier device. White SBS at 14 to 18pt is the print surface for accessory cartons where fine type and product photography need to hold. Corrugated E-flute suits printed mailers and B-flute the outer shippers. Kraft paperboard at 300 to 400gsm is available where an uncoated board suits the brand. FSC-certified and recyclable stocks are available by specification, with soy and water-based inks.

What to Think About Before You Order

Decide the internal fit before the outer box. Send the device dimensions, the weight, and what else travels with it, cables, documentation, mounting hardware, and say how you want those arranged. The dieline is drawn from that at no cost, and it is far cheaper to resolve the internal layout at the dieline stage than after a run is printed.

Be deliberate about print coverage on the presentation box. Large flat panels in a single dark color show handling marks and scuffing more than a lighter or patterned surface, which is one reason soft-touch and matte finishes get specified on device boxes. Spot UV against a matte field is the usual way to pick out a logo without printing the whole panel glossy.

Order in tiers that match your product cycle. A device with a long shelf life justifies a higher quantity tier and the lower unit cost. A first production run, a pilot, or a crowdfunded batch is what the 50-unit minimum is for, since it lets you get real boxes in hand before locking a large order to a design you have not shipped yet.
