That eighth of an inch on each face is what lets a hand packer close the tuck without scuffing the soap. Kraft at 18pt to 20pt is the working range for bar soap. Thinner stock buckles when the bar shifts.
Bar size to box size
Soap is one of the few products where the mold, the cure, and the trim all move the finished dimension. Cut a test bar, let it cure the full time you normally allow, then measure that bar rather than the mold cavity. Cold process bars lose water as they cure and can shrink by a small but real amount across the width.

Which kraft you are actually buying
The word kraft covers three different materials. Solid unbleached sulfate is virgin kraft with an even brown face, and it takes a die cut cleanly at 18pt to 24pt. Kraft back chipboard is grey on the inside face and cheaper, which is fine when the interior never shows. Kraft corrugated at E flute gives a 1/16 inch wall for gift sets or for shipping a case of bars without an outer carton.

A kraft sleeve costs less than a full carton because it uses less board and needs a simpler die, and it lets the buyer smell the bar in the shop.
