Heat, steam, and the carton that goes soft
Hot food releases steam and steam finds the score lines first. That is where a closed carton loses stiffness and starts to sag under its own contents. Two rows of quarter inch vent holes on the top panel, or a pair of crescent slots, let it out. On a gable box the handle opening already provides some of that path. Pet food has its own rules
