B flute and E flute are corrugated profiles that differ mainly in wave height. B flute measures about 0.125 inches thick with roughly 47 flutes per foot, so it cushions well and stacks strongly. E flute measures about 0.0625 inches with roughly 90 flutes per foot, so it prints smoother in a thinner wall. Retail mailers usually run E; heavier shippers run B.

Same materials, different wave
Both profiles are built the same way: a wavy medium glued between two flat liners. What separates them is the size of the wave. B flute uses a taller, wider arch and fewer of them across a given distance. E flute uses a short, tight arch packed roughly twice as densely. Every practical difference between the two boards falls out of that single geometric choice.
Taller arches enclose more air, so B flute is thicker and absorbs impact better. Tighter arches leave less unsupported liner between peaks, so E flute has a flatter, more stable surface for graphics and folds more crisply at a score.

Choosing by what the box has to survive
Start with the failure you are trying to prevent. A parcel that will be thrown, dropped and stacked with heavier freight above it needs the cushion and the column strength of a taller flute, so B is the sensible default. A box carried inside an outer master carton, or holding something light and unbreakable, has no use for that cushion and pays for it in board cost and shelf space.
Flat crush is the case that surprises people. E flute resists pressure applied straight down on the face better than B, because its short arches are harder to collapse. B resists impact better but crushes more readily under a point load on the panel. If your packaging gets squeezed rather than dropped, the thinner board may genuinely be the stronger choice.
Stacking strength is separate from both and is measured by the edge crush test value rather than by profile alone. A 32 ECT board exists in both profiles, and the two will hold comparable static loads while behaving quite differently everywhere else.
Printing on each
This is where most retail buyers land on E flute. Printing directly onto B flute liner produces visible ridging across large solid areas, because the liner dips slightly between each arch and ink density follows the dips. Light coverage barely shows it; a dark full-bleed panel shows it plainly. E flute's tighter spacing reduces it to the point where a printed surface reads much like a folding carton.
Two workarounds exist for B. Litho lamination bonds a separately printed sheet to the corrugated, which delivers offset quality on a thick board at extra cost and lead time. Alternatively, design around the texture with lighter coverage and larger graphic elements. Direct print quality also depends on the press method, which our flexography page covers.
Cost, storage and the combined option
E flute uses less material per square foot and ships flatter, so both purchase cost and inbound freight tend to be lower on comparable ECT grades. Warehouse space favors it heavily; flat E flute blanks stack in roughly half the height of the same count in B.
When one profile cannot do both jobs, EB double wall glues the two together, giving a printable outer face over a cushioning inner layer. That board is thick, stiff and expensive, and it earns its place on heavy or fragile items rather than on standard ecommerce parcels.
