The coating you already own without asking for it
Pick up almost any printed carton and run a thumbnail across the surface. The ink does not smudge and the panel has a faint sheen even where the artwork is light. That is aqueous coating, applied as a matter of course on most sheetfed carton work, usually without appearing as a separate line on the quote.
It goes on in line. After the final ink unit, a coater station rolls a thin, even film of water-based fluid across the entire sheet. Hot air and infrared drive off the water within seconds, leaving a hard clear layer bonded to the ink. Because it happens in the same pass, nothing has to be reloaded, re-registered or shipped to a second vendor.
What it is actually protecting against
Fresh ink is vulnerable long before a customer sees it. Sheets get stacked, jogged, fed through a die cutter, folded, glued, packed and shipped. Every one of those steps rubs printed surfaces against each other. Without a coating, dark solids scuff into visible grey streaks and boxes lower down in a shipping carton arrive marked.
Coating also stops set-off, where wet ink transfers onto the back of the sheet above it in the stack. Speeding up handling is a real production benefit as well, since coated sheets can move to the next operation sooner than uncoated ones.

Gloss, satin and matte
The same base chemistry ships in several sheens. Gloss lifts saturation in photographs and deepens dark colors, which is why product imagery usually looks better under it. Matte and dull formulations knock back the shine for a quieter, more premium surface, at the cost of some apparent contrast in images. Satin sits between the two.
Matte aqueous is the closest inexpensive approximation to a matte laminated feel, though the two are not equivalent. Film has a distinct hand and far more resistance; matte coating is thinner, cheaper and reads flatter. For genuinely tactile surfaces, soft touch lamination is the different product buyers are usually picturing.
Limits worth knowing
Aqueous protects, but not indefinitely and not against everything. It is not a moisture barrier, not a grease barrier and not a substitute for a functional liner. Heavy abrasion over a long distribution cycle will still mark it. On very heavy ink coverage the protection is less complete than a film would provide, since the coating is thin and follows the ink surface rather than covering it in bulk.
Two interactions matter at the file stage. Glue flaps must be left uncoated, because adhesive bonds to fiber and not to a slick coating; a knockout area is built into the tooling for exactly that. Foil stamping likewise needs the right coating formula underneath it or the foil will not grip. Flag both when you send artwork so the coater blanket is cut correctly against your dieline.
Choosing a surface on a Teal quote
For most folding cartons, aqueous is the right default and the question is only which sheen. Move up to UV when a panel needs high gloss or a spot contrast effect. Move up to film when the box is handled repeatedly, needs to survive a long supply chain, or has to feel a certain way in the hand.
Coverage matters more than the product category. A light, uncoated-looking design with plenty of white space survives fine under aqueous. A box printed edge to edge in a deep color under heavy CMYK coverage is the case where scuffing shows first, and it is worth stepping up.

Ask to see a coated sample in the sheen you are considering before committing to a full run, since sheen is one of the few specifications a screen cannot represent at all.
