A finish you notice with your hands
Most packaging decisions are visual. This one is not. Soft touch film has a microscopically textured surface that drags very slightly against skin, and the sensation registers as velvet or fine suede. People pick up a box wrapped in it and turn it over without quite knowing why. That reaction is the entire product.
The optical effect follows from the same texture. Light hits an irregular surface and scatters in every direction rather than bouncing back as a highlight, so the panel has almost no visible sheen. Blacks look genuinely black. Bright colors lose a little apparent saturation, which is the tradeoff.
How it gets onto the board
Lamination is an off-line operation, separate from printing. Printed sheets are fed through a laminator where a roll of film meets the board under heat and pressure, bonded either by an adhesive layer or by the film itself softening. The laminated sheets then go on to cutting and folding.
Because it happens after printing and adds a step, lamination extends production time and adds cost per sheet. It also changes how the board behaves at the crease: a laminated panel folds more reliably than a coated one and is far less likely to crack along a dark fold, which is a practical reason to choose film on heavy coverage designs regardless of the feel.

The honest drawbacks
Fingerprints are the first one. On a large solid dark panel, skin oils sit on the textured surface and leave visible marks that a gloss film would shrug off. Retail packaging that customers handle on shelf before buying can look tired by the end of a day. Lighter colors and patterned designs mask it well; a matte black box does not.
Scratches are the second. The film resists abrasion, but when something does cut into it the scratch appears lighter than the surrounding area and reads clearly against dark ink. Anti scuff matte is a reasonable compromise where a supply chain is rough and the tactile quality is a nice-to-have rather than the point.
Cost is the third. Soft touch is the priciest of the four films, and the gap widens on large sheets. It also adds calendar days, since laminating is a separate pass on a separate machine.
What it pairs with
The contrast between a low-sheen field and a shiny element is the reason this film shows up so often on premium packaging. Spot UV applied over soft touch produces a wet-looking gloss shape floating on a matte surface. A metallic mark laid down by foil stamping reads brighter here than on any other finish. Deciding on it for your packaging
Soft touch earns its cost on packaging a customer keeps, unboxes deliberately or holds for more than a moment. Rigid lids, sleeves, cosmetic cartons and subscription boxes are the usual candidates. Outer shipping cartons are not, since nobody caresses a shipper and the film adds cost to something that gets recycled on arrival.
Request a physical sample before you commit. No photograph and no screen render conveys a tactile finish, and this is the one specification where buyers regularly approve something on a monitor and then feel surprised by the delivery.
