Teal Packaging is a US-based custom packaging supplier that makes custom printed perfume boxes and rigid fragrance packaging for beauty brands. USPS states that perfume containing alcohol may not be shipped internationally or mailed domestically using air transportation, so alcohol-based fragrance moves as a surface material with required mailpiece marking. Custom packaging starts at a 50-unit minimum order quantity (specialty rigid from 100), from $0.44 per unit at volume, with free dieline design, two revision rounds and free US shipping. Typical fits: indie fragrance houses, beauty subscription brands, and luxury gifting programs.

Can you ship perfume?
Domestically in the US, yes, but only by surface transportation and with the mailpiece marked correctly. Perfume containing alcohol cannot be mailed internationally through USPS and cannot travel by air. The reason is flammability: alcohol-based fragrance is treated as a limited quantity hazardous material, not as ordinary cosmetics.
What does USPS say about perfume?
USPS states: "Perfume containing alcohol may not be shipped internationally or mailed domestically using air transportation."
Alcohol-based fragrance travels as a limited quantity surface material, prohibited for international mail, barred from Priority Mail Express and Priority Mail, and the mailpiece must be marked "Surface Only" or "Surface Mail Only." (Sources: usps.com shipping restrictions; USPS Publication 52, chapter 3.)
Two practical consequences. First, your fastest USPS service options are off the table, so build the delivery promise around a surface timeline rather than an air one. Second, the marking is not optional; an unmarked mailpiece can be pulled from the network.
Other carriers run their own hazardous materials programs for fragrance with their own approval requirements, quantities and paperwork. Check your carrier's requirements before you ship, and do not assume USPS rules transfer.
What about alcohol-free and solid fragrance?
| Product | USPS domestic | USPS international | Marking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alcohol-based perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette | Surface only, no air | Prohibited | "Surface Only" or "Surface Mail Only" |
| Solid perfume, balm format | Generally mailable as a cosmetic | Check destination rules | None specific |
| Oil-based fragrance with no alcohol | Depends on the formulation | Check destination rules | Confirm with your carrier |
| Empty bottles and packaging | Mailable | Mailable | None |
If you are unsure which category a formulation falls into, the safety data sheet from your fragrance manufacturer is the document that answers it. Do not guess from the ingredient list on the carton.
How do you pack a fragrance bottle?
- Secure the atomizer. The sprayer is the part that leaks. Cap it, and where possible use a plug or a collar so it cannot depress in transit.
- Bag the bottle. A sealed bag contains any leak before it reaches the printed carton.
- Use a fitted insert. A moulded or corrugated insert that holds the bottle upright with no contact against another bottle or an outer wall. Glass fails at contact points.
- Keep it upright. Mark "This Way Up". A bottle on its side puts constant pressure on the sprayer seal.
- Double box for shipping. The retail perfume box is display packaging. It goes inside a corrugated shipper with cushioning on all sides.
- Mark the mailpiece "Surface Only" or "Surface Mail Only" for alcohol-based fragrance in USPS mail.
- Do not overpack multiples loose. Every bottle gets its own cell.
What packaging does Teal make?
Teal makes custom luxury perfume packaging and custom perfume subscription boxes to your bottle dimensions, printed, from a 50-unit minimum order quantity, or 100 units and up for specialty rigid construction. Volume pricing runs from about $0.44 per unit, dieline design is free, and every order includes two revision rounds and free US shipping.
Brief the bottle height including the cap, the base footprint and the shoulder profile. Fragrance inserts are dimension-critical, and a cavity built from a rendered bottle rather than a real one will rattle. For the shipping outer, custom corrugated mailer boxes take the retail carton with cushioning.
Common failures
- Shipping by air. Prohibited for alcohol-based fragrance in USPS domestic mail.
- No surface marking. The mailpiece can be pulled from the network.
- Unsecured atomizer. The single most common cause of a leaked shipment.
- Retail carton shipped bare. Arrives crushed, and for a luxury product the carton is part of what the customer bought.
