How does shipping work when you order from Teal?
Every Teal order moves on one of three transit tiers, chosen per job when you quote: rush by air, standard by air, or cost saver by sea. Production runs from about 7 business days after proof approval, then transit is added on top. US shipping on custom packaging orders is free at every tier.
This page covers the transit side: how the tiers differ, what free US shipping includes, who picks the carrier, and how to back a delivery date out of a launch date. If you need Teal to ship finished parcels to your customers rather than to you, that is a different service and it lives on ship custom boxes to recipients.
What are the three transit tiers?
| Tier | Mode | Best for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rush | Air | A fixed launch, event or restock date you cannot move | Highest freight cost; a rush premium of about 7 to 25 percent may apply depending on the job |
| Standard | Air | Most orders. The default unless you ask otherwise | Balanced cost and speed |
| Cost saver | Sea | Large runs planned well ahead, or repeat stock | Longest transit by a wide margin; plan in weeks, not days |
Long durations on a cost saver quote are legitimate, not an error. Sea freight is the reason the per-unit price drops on big runs, and it is the right choice when the stock is not needed for months. If a date matters, say so at quote and take rush or standard.
What does free US shipping cover?
Free US shipping applies to the inbound delivery of your custom packaging order to a US address. It is the freight on the packaging you bought. It does not cover outbound parcel postage when Teal is fulfilling orders on your behalf, because that is per-parcel carrier cost billed against your order profile.
Two things worth checking before you assume a date: rush handling and freight are separate levers, and an address that needs liftgate, appointment or residential delivery changes the carrier's service, not Teal's production timing.
Who chooses the carrier?
For inbound packaging deliveries, Teal books the freight. For outbound fulfillment parcels, you can specify a carrier and service level, or leave it to Teal to select per parcel by destination, weight and speed. If you have negotiated carrier rates, bring them; Teal can ship on your account.
Teal does not publish carrier rate tables. Rates change, they vary by account, and a quoted number that is stale is worse than no number. Live rates come back with the fulfillment quote.
How do you plan backwards from a launch date?
- Fix the date the stock must be in hand, not the date it ships.
- Subtract US delivery: 2 to 5 business days on a standard domestic move.
- Subtract production: from about 7 business days after proof approval, longer for complex or high-volume orders.
- Subtract proofing: allow time for the digital proof and up to two revision rounds, which are included on every order.
- Whatever is left is your artwork deadline. If it has already passed, ask about rush at quote rather than after the order is placed.
What if you are shipping something regulated?
Teal supplies and ships the packaging. What you then put inside it is governed by carrier and federal rules that vary by commodity, and some items are outright nonmailable. Alcoholic beverages, for example, are nonmailable through the US Postal Service under 18 U.S.C. 1716 and USPS Publication 52 section 424.
Before you ship a regulated product, check your carrier's requirements for that specific commodity. Teal publishes packing guides for the common cases: alcohol, dry ice, lithium batteries, perishable food and perfume. The full set is indexed on the packaging guides hub.
