A number that means the same thing in every plant
Before standardized color, matching a brand red across two print shops meant mailing a physical sample back and forth and arguing about it. The Pantone Matching System replaced that with a catalog. Each entry has an identifier such as 186 or 2925, a printed reference chip, and a formula stating how many parts of which base inks make it. A press operator in West Chicago, Illinois and another in Guangzhou mix from the same recipe and land in the same place.
That is the whole value. Pantone is not a better kind of color, and it is not required for good printing. It is a shared reference, useful precisely when the alternative is a description like corporate navy.

What the letters after the number mean
A Pantone reference is incomplete without its suffix, because the same ink looks different on different paper. The C suffix shows the color on coated stock, where ink sits on the surface and stays saturated. The U suffix shows it on uncoated stock, where fiber absorbs the ink and the result reads lighter and duller. Pantone 286 C and Pantone 286 U are the same ink and two visibly different blues.
This catches brand teams out constantly. A guideline document specifies a coated value, the job runs on uncoated kraft, and the delivered box looks washed out next to the brand manual. Nothing went wrong at the press. The stock did what stock does. Pick the reference that matches the substrate you are actually printing on, or accept a shift and approve it in advance.
Other suffixes appear on specialty guides, including metallics and neons that cannot be simulated with process inks at all. If your brand color is a metallic Pantone, no four color build will reach it, and the realistic alternatives are a spot metallic ink or metallic leaf applied through foil stamping.
When the gamut runs out
A large share of Pantone solid colors sit outside what cyan, magenta, yellow and black can reach together. Bright oranges, deep royal blues, saturated greens and anything fluorescent are the usual casualties. Pantone publishes bridge guides that print the spot chip beside its closest process simulation so you can see the gap before committing. Some colors bridge almost invisibly. Others do not come close, and no amount of press adjustment will fix that.
This is the decision point on most packaging jobs. Either pay for a dedicated plate and get the exact color, or accept the nearest four color approximation and keep the job on a single pass. The answer depends on how much of the panel the color occupies. A logo two inches wide in a corner tolerates a small shift. A box whose entire surface is your brand color does not.
Digital, flexo and litho behave differently
Conventional offset and flexography both accept a genuine spot ink on its own unit, so both can hit a Pantone target directly. Digital presses generally cannot, since they lay down a fixed toner or ink set and simulate the target within their own gamut. Many digital devices simulate well enough for short runs, and some carry extended ink sets that widen the range, but the result is a simulation and should be judged on a physical proof rather than assumed.
Putting color on a Teal order
Give the full reference including the suffix, state which panels carry it, and say whether an exact match matters or a close match is acceptable. Send artwork with the swatch named correctly in the file rather than converted to a process build, because a converted swatch loses the instruction entirely and prepress has no way to recover it.
A digital proof goes out on every job, and color gets checked at that point against the reference you supplied. Ask for a physical sample when a color is doing heavy brand work, since a backlit monitor overstates saturation on almost every screen.
