Common peptide vial sizes and their typical dimensions
Research and compounding peptide vials are almost always small glass serum vials with a crimp neck and a flip-off or tear-off cap. Four nominal volumes cover most box projects: 2ml, 3ml, 5ml, and 10ml. The table below gives the typical body diameter and body height range for each, measured without the cap. Read every figure as a range, not a spec. Tubular glass and molded glass vials of the same nominal volume differ in wall thickness, shoulder shape, and base profile, and two suppliers of the same 10ml peptide vial can be several millimeters apart.

The cap adds height above the body figure, and a flip-off cap on a 13mm or 20mm finish can sit wider than the vial shoulder. Why a size chart is a starting point, not an insert spec
An insert well that is two millimeters too wide lets a vial rattle. One that is one millimeter too tight will not seat, and a run of fifty boxes with a well that does not seat is a run of fifty boxes reworked by hand. That is why the working numbers come from a physical vial, never from a nominal volume. Before Teal cuts anything, the designer needs four measurements from the vial you will actually pack:
- Closed height, cap on, base to the top of the cap.
- Widest diameter, checking both the body and the cap.
- Shoulder profile, since a sharp shoulder and a sloped shoulder seat differently in a die-cut well.
- Label build-up, if the vial is labeled before it goes into the box, because a wrapped label adds to the diameter.

Insert options by vial count
Most peptide boxes hold 5, 10, or 20 vials. The count drives the insert layout, the insert layout drives the box footprint, and the footprint drives the box style. Three insert constructions cover nearly every project.
- Die-cut paperboard platform. A flat board with punched wells, folded to sit at a set depth in the carton. Light, printable, low cost, and suited to folding cartons and mailers.
- Folded paperboard partitions. Interlocking strips that form a grid of cells. Good for upright vials in a tuck-end carton where each cell only needs to stop side-to-side movement.
- Die-cut foam block. A closed-cell foam pad with routed or die-cut wells sized to the closed vial. Holds the vial firmly by its body, suits rigid boxes and presentation kits, and takes the most care to fit.
5-vial inserts
Five vials usually sit in a single row, which gives a slim carton about the proportions of a card box, or in a two-and-three offset that produces a squarer footprint. A single row keeps the box thin enough for a tuck-end carton with a paperboard platform. The offset layout is the usual pick when the box also needs a slot for a card or a folded document.
10-vial inserts
Ten vials nearly always run as two rows of five. This is the most common peptide box layout and the one most buyers start with. A 2 x 5 grid in a paperboard platform fits a tuck-end carton; the same grid in foam fits a two-piece rigid box or a magnetic-closure box.
20-vial inserts
Twenty vials go four rows of five on a single level, or two stacked layers of ten. A single level keeps the box shallow and lets every vial show when the lid comes off, which suits a presentation kit. Stacked layers halve the footprint but need a lift-out tray or a second platform, so the insert costs more and the box gets taller. How outer box dimensions follow from the insert
Buyers often ask for a box size first and an insert second. It works better the other way around. The insert is sized from the vial and the box is sized from the insert, so the outer dimensions are an output of the process rather than an input.
The inside length and width of the box come from the number of wells in each direction, multiplied by the well pitch (vial diameter plus the web between wells), plus a clearance at each wall so the insert drops in without binding. The inside depth comes from the closed vial height, plus the thickness of the insert floor, plus enough headroom for the lid to close without pressing on the caps. Board thickness is then added to every inside figure to reach the outside dimension, and it is the outside dimension that appears on the dieline and the proof.
That chain has practical consequences. Ten 2ml vials and ten 10ml vials in the same two-by-five grid produce boxes with clearly different footprints and depths, so a box built for one will not serve the other. Switching from a paperboard platform to foam adds floor thickness and often calls for a rigid box rather than a folding carton. A peptide box carries three kinds of information: brand identity, product identification, and variable data such as a lot or batch reference that the buyer adds after printing. Each needs its own panel.
- Front panel: brand, product name, nominal volume, and vial count. This is the printed face and the one that reads on a shelf or in a photo.
- Side panels: product name repeated so the box reads when stored spine-out, plus any supplied handling text the buyer wants visible.
- Back or base panel: a blank, unvarnished area sized for the buyer's own lot or batch label. Leaving this panel unprinted means one carton design serves every batch.
Keep printed text and the blank label area away from fold lines, tuck flaps, glue seams, and any tamper-evident seal position, since text across a fold cracks and a label over a seam lifts.
