Board weight is the first decision, and it moves your date
Cartons run on two board families here. White SBS at 14 to 18pt gives you a bright, coated print surface and a clean fold, and it is the default for retail cartons where the artwork carries the shelf. Kraft paperboard at 300 to 400gsm gives you an uncoated brown substrate with a different ink behavior, which suits brands that want the material to read as the design.
The practical rush point is that board weight is a decision, and an undecided board is a stalled job. A carton specified as 16pt SBS moves. A carton described as "somewhere around a medium weight, we will decide after the proof" does not, because the proof itself depends on the substrate. Naming the caliper or gsm in your first message costs you nothing and protects your timeline. What affects rush feasibility on a folding carton
- Tuck style. A straight tuck end or reverse tuck end carton on a standard die is the shortest route to a shorter window. An auto-bottom, a complex closure, or a locking structure adds die and gluing complexity.
- The die itself. If your carton fits a die we already have, that is a step removed from the schedule. A new die-cut structure means a new tool, and new tooling is a scheduled step, not an instant one.
- Glue seam and folding. A single glue seam runs on the line. Multi-panel gluing, hand gluing, or an insert that has to be married to the carton adds handling.
- Finish stack. Full-color printing is included. Foil stamping, embossing, debossing, spot UV, and soft-touch each add a pass, and each pass is a separate scheduling slot. Stacking three finishes on a tight date is the most common reason a carton lands in the standard window.
- Die-cut windows. A window in a carton face adds a cutting and registration step, and a windowed carton with a film patch adds another.
- Quantity. Runs near the 50-unit minimum and high-volume runs schedule differently. High volumes may need the standard production window regardless of file quality.
Materials and finishes for a rush carton
The carton materials are white SBS at 14 to 18pt and kraft paperboard at 300 to 400gsm.
