How do you ship cookies?
Cool cookies completely, seal them against air, stack them flat in tight columns with interleaf between layers, and fill every void so nothing can move. Sturdy cookies travel well without refrigeration. The three enemies are breakage from movement, staling from air, and flavor transfer between varieties.
Which cookies survive shipping?
| Cookie | Ships well? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Drop cookies (chocolate chip, oatmeal) | Yes | Dense and forgiving. The safest choice |
| Bar cookies and brownies | Yes | Flat and stable. Cut after cooling, interleave layers |
| Biscotti and shortbread | Yes | Low moisture, long shelf life, but brittle. Pack tight |
| Sandwich and filled cookies | Usually | Filling can soften in heat. Avoid in summer without a cold pack |
| Iced and decorated cookies | With care | Icing must be fully cured. Individually bag, then cell-pack |
| Thin crisp or lace cookies | Difficult | Break under their own stack weight. Use a rigid insert |
| Soft frosted or cream-filled | No | Deform and spoil. Not a shipping product |
How do you pack them?
- Cool completely. Warm cookies release steam, steam becomes condensation, and condensation makes everything soggy inside a sealed bag.
- Separate by flavor. Strong flavors transfer. Mint and citrus will find their way into every other cookie in the box if they share a bag.
- Stack flat in columns, not loose in a pile. A tight column supports itself; a loose pile grinds itself to crumbs.
- Interleave layers with parchment or a liner sheet so cookies do not rub.
- Seal against air. A sealed bag or pouch inside the box holds texture. Crisp cookies go soft and soft cookies go hard when they breathe.
- Fill every void. Any empty space becomes movement, and movement becomes breakage.
- Use a rigid outer. Corrugated, not a padded envelope. Cookies get crushed, not just knocked.
How do you stop breakage?
Breakage is almost always a void space problem rather than a cushioning problem. A snug column of cookies in a sealed bag, packed so the bag itself cannot shift, is stronger than the same cookies floating in a larger box surrounded by fill. Size the inner packaging to the count you are actually shipping, and if the count varies, use a tin, a cell insert, or a folding box that adjusts.
For fragile decorated cookies, a moulded insert with one cavity each is the only reliable answer.
What packaging does Teal make?
Teal makes custom cookie bags, custom cookie tins and custom bakery boxes to your dimensions, printed, from a 50-unit minimum order quantity. Volume pricing runs from about $0.44 per unit, dieline design is free, and every order includes two revision rounds and free US shipping.
Food-safe material options are available by specification with documentation on request. Specify the requirement in your brief rather than assuming a stock board meets it. For the shipping outer, custom corrugated mailer boxes take the inner box without slack.
Common failures
- Packing warm. Condensation ruins texture inside a sealed bag.
- Mixed flavors in one bag. Everything tastes like the strongest cookie.
- Padded envelope. No crush resistance. Cookies arrive as crumbs.
- Loose fill instead of a tight pack. Fill stops impact; it does not stop grinding.
- Slow service in summer. Chocolate blooms and melts. Ship fast or ship in cooler months.
